Hello Everyone! 👋 Samet Çelmeli here.
Before we dive into the news, I have a small request: Please share this bulletin with your friends and on your social media accounts so it can reach more people. That way, we can spread the latest updates from Alanya to a wider audience. Now, let’s see what’s been happening in Alanya this week. It’s been quite a busy one. 👇
📰 General News
🌧️ On Dec 7-10, heavy rain and strong winds caused flash flooding across Alanya. Some homes and shops flooded, underpasses and the ring road filled, and cars were stranded. A mosque minaret in Elikesik collapsed during severe weather. Teams set up a crisis desk and then began citywide cleanup.
🌍 Two earthquakes shook Antalya province on Dec 8: a 4.3 quake near Konyaaltı at 03:31, and a stronger 4.9 tremor centred in Serik at 13:21, about 28,25 km deep. Official lists also logged smaller aftershocks during the day. The shaking was felt widely, with brief swaying indoors and no major damage or injuries reported in early checks.
🏚️ Four cooperative blocks on Barbaros Street in Mahmutlar have had a demolition order since 2004 and a confirmed risky-building report, yet remain standing and partly occupied by tenants. Officials say strengthening is not allowed after permits were cancelled and there is no legal barrier to demolition, but owners say the process is stuck.
📉 The Turkish lira weakened further this week, with USD/TRY near 42.7 and EUR/TRY around 50.2. Many residents and businesses in Alanya closely watched prices and contracts as import costs and travel plans became harder to predict.
🚧 Progress continues on the Antalya-Alanya motorway as crews connected the 1,5 km tunnel on the Kaymaz-Beydiğin line. The full route is 122 km in total, including 84 km of main road and 38 km of links. Plans include 7 interchanges, 5 tunnels and 16 viaducts to ease D-400 traffic, but a clear end date remains uncertain.
🎓 A busy week highlighted Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University, which took part in Antalya’s Dec 5 IT Summit, ran Social Media 101 training, and held Erasmus briefings for students. The university also secured TÜBİTAK support for four projects and hosted a Madagascar delegation, strengthening academic and international ties.
🏠 Local agents warned Alanya’s real estate market is being undercut by unlicensed brokers using Telegram groups to arrange sales and rentals, often without tax registration or an office, and claiming about 40% of business. With residence permit limits already slowing demand, the sector is urging stricter checks and clearer rules.
⚓ Boat owners at Alanya’s fishing shelter marina reacted strongly after operators raised mooring fees by 950%. Members of the cooperative protested, claiming the hike is unfair and unaffordable, forcing some to consider moving their boats elsewhere. Discussions continue between the cooperative and boat owners over the disputed charges.
🏗️ The TOKİ social housing plan for 452 homes in Tepe has restarted its ÇED review. After a negative note from Alanya Municipality, the first file was cancelled on Dec 3. The developer revised the dossier and reapplied on Dec 12. The next step is a decision from the Antalya Governorate on whether the process can move forward.
🚔 Traffic and Public Safety
🕯️ A family dispute escalated into a gun attack at a real estate office in Alanya’s Saray area on Dec 11. Police said the suspect (İlhan Sönmez) was the uncle of one victim and a former business partner. He opened fire inside the office, leaving three people seriously injured, including a young woman who later died in the hospital. He fled, posted on social media, then shot himself in a mosque yard. He remains in intensive care, and the investigation continues.
🏫 On Dec 9, families in Mahmutlar said four 5-year-old children at a state-run kindergarten were assaulted by a teacher. They filed a complaint with the Alanya prosecutor, backed by medical reports. Media also reported the teacher had faced a similar case in Gazipaşa. Judicial and administrative investigations continue, and authorities are reviewing the claims.
🚑 Reported on Dec 10, a 4-year-old girl was seriously injured after a van struck her on a neighborhood road in Mahmutlar, Alanya. Witnesses called 112 and she was taken by ambulance to hospital, where doctors said her condition is critical. The driver was detained by gendarmerie and an investigation has been opened into the case.
🚗 A car owner in Alanya claimed a luxury Mercedes worth millions fell from a service lift during maintenance. The vehicle reportedly suffered serious damage, yet the service allegedly changed the tires and returned it without clear disclosure. The owner filed a legal complaint, while the service denied wrongdoing and an investigation is ongoing.
🚔 During a copyright inspection in Damlataş on Dec 7, a restaurant faced a surprise check for illegal match broadcasts, part of tighter recent controls. A dispute between the broadcaster’s lawyer and staff escalated, and police were called. Officers calmed the scene, and the official report was completed under supervision before the lawyer left.
🚨 A new rule highlights tougher traffic penalties in Alanya and across Türkiye. Drivers who ignore police stop orders now face fines up to 200.000 TL, along with licence points and possible vehicle bans.
🚗 The Ministry of Trade extended the stay period for Ukraine-registered vehicles in Turkey until June 30, 2026, following public reaction. The decision allows affected drivers to keep their vehicles in the country longer without penalties.
✈️ Tourism
🏨 A KVKK decision published on Dec 9 ends the practice of taking ID photocopies at hotels. Staff may check the document visually and record only needed identity details and check-in/out dates. Hotels are also told to destroy old copies already collected.
🕳️ Alanya’s Damlataş Cave was reported to have welcomed about 270,000 visitors in 2025, up from 250,000 last year, including local and foreign tourists. Its cool 15 to 20°C air, high humidity and low radioactivity make it popular with guests seeking easier breathing, while staying a key tourism attraction near the city center.
📈 New DHMI figures released Dec 12 show Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport handled 966,580 passengers from Jan to Nov 2025. In November, it served 30,958 domestic and 19,575 international travellers. Across Turkey, airports passed 229 million passengers; tourism-region airports totalled 60.6 million, and Antalya Airport reached 38,085,216.

🎄 The 15th International Christmas Market opened on Dec 13 behind the Old Municipality Building and continues today, Dec 14, 10:00-00:00.
