Hello Everyone! 👋 Samet Çelmeli here.
Alanya had a quiet week with few noteworthy events, so this week’s summary is a bit shorter than usual.
On a personal note, this has been a very difficult week for me. I lost a dear friend, Thom Fackeldey, who passed away unexpectedly after a heart attack. Thom was one of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve ever had the privilege to know. Rest in peace, my friend. You will be deeply missed.
📰 General News
🏛️ Alanya Municipality is inviting residents to help decide the future of the Old Municipality Building. During the International Tourism Festival on May 23–25, a special booth will be set up at İskele Square for locals to share their ideas, including cultural, artistic, or social uses. Those unable to attend can join the survey online at the municipality’s website.
🌟 Alanya Municipality has revived the Kabak Street Project ahead of the summer season to support the social inclusion and productivity of individuals with disabilities. Around 2,000 handcrafted gourd lamps, made by 20 participants from the Accessible Art Workshop, now illuminate Kabak Street and other key locations, including the Municipal Tea Garden.
🚐 Vehicle congestion at Alanya’s harbor is worsening as tour buses block traffic by parking from morning until late afternoon. Citizens report that after dropping off tourists at boat tours around 09:00, these vehicles remain parked until 16:00, causing major disruptions. Locals and business owners are urging authorities to create alternative waiting areas to restore flow and ease summer traffic pressure.
🌦️ Alanya will experience a noticeable shift in weather next week. While the weekend brings mild conditions around 28°C with low humidity, Monday’s temperature drops to 26°C, but humidity soars to 81%, creating a stifling atmosphere. Rain is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, with cooler temperatures around 23–25°C, and lower humidity ranging between 33–34%.
🚔 Traffic and Public Safety
😢 Two young lives were lost in a tragic accident on the Alanya–Manavgat road when a motorcycle crashed into a parked minibus. The victims, Kazım Alış (24) and Medine Badirova (25), were thrown onto the roadway by the force of the impact and died at the scene.
😢 In Alanya's Seki neighborhood, motorcyclist Fatih Yüksel lost control of his vehicle and collided with a roadside garbage container. He was thrown onto the road, and emergency responders later confirmed his death at the scene.
🚨 A head-on collision between two motorcycles took place at the Metro Junction in Oba Neighborhood. Rider S.Ş. entered the one-way section of the old Gazipaşa Street from the wrong direction and collided with A.B., who was exiting Fatih Street. Both riders and their passengers were injured and taken to the hospital. Police have launched an investigation.
🚨 A multi-vehicle accident occurred on the D400 highway in Mahmutlar, Alanya, involving three cars in a chain collision. Several people were injured, though none are in critical condition. One vehicle overturned onto the median, and the road was temporarily closed.
🚔 During a police patrol in Alanya, officers stopped a suspicious individual, C.G., and found a firearm with 10 rounds and 193 narcotic pills in his possession. The incident occurred around 04:00 during a foot patrol by the Alanya Police Department. C.G. was taken into custody, referred to court, and subsequently arrested and sent to prison.
✈️ Tourism
😟 A tourist was allegedly assaulted at a Damlataş beach club, prompting the Alanya District Governorship to seal the club and begin legal action. The business owner claimed the tourist was intoxicated and initiated the altercation. District Governor Dr. Fatih Ürkmezer met the tourist and family, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable and tourist safety is a top priority.
🛡️ A safety-focused meeting was held in Antalya with tourism transport companies, particularly those operating safari and tour vehicles, led by Governor Hulusi Şahin and attended by key officials and sector representatives. The event emphasized passenger safety, especially in Alanya, where safari accidents have raised concerns.
🌍 A German company launched a striking campaign offering an 8-day holiday in Alanya for just €199, including flights, 5-star hotel accommodation, and city tours. While the offer gained attention in Germany, it sparked outrage in Turkey, where locals criticized the economic disparity that allows foreign visitors to vacation cheaply while similar experiences remain out of reach for many citizens. 🛫 In April 2025, Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP) saw a total of 68,286 passengers, with 34,271 from domestic and 34,015 from international flights. Although April saw an increase compared to previous months, the total traffic for the first four months of 2025 reached 182,600 passengers, showing a decline from the same period in 2024.
